The Middlebury ski team is in third place after one day of racing at the Dartmouth Carnival. Rob Cone highlighted action on the first day, capturing the giant slalom race for the men's alpine team, which placed second overall. Dartmouth leads with 456 points, followed by UVM (416), Middlebury (341) and UNH (301). Action resumes on Saturday with nordic events as well as the slalom races.
Cone's title at the Dartmouth Skiway was the sixth of his career on the carnival circuit. He led the field after the first run and came in with a total time of 2:03.17. Placing sixth in the event was Colin Hayes, who covered the two runs in 2:04.71. Riley Plant was third for the Panthers and 16th overall, crossing the line with a time of 2:06.07.
Caroline Bartlett led the field after the first run, but slipped to third place overall after run number two, finishing with a time of 2:08.74 to pace the third-place women. Lexi Calcagni was the next Panther on the results sheet, placing 12th overall with a two-run time of 2:10.85. Rounding out the team scorers was Katie Utter, whose time of 2:11.41 placed her four spots back in 16th.
The nordic races were moved to the Craftsbury Nordic Center after a lack of snow at Dartmouth's home course. Friday's contested races were the 3x5K freestyle relay events. The Middlebury men's team comprised of Sam Wood, Adam Luban and Evan Weinman finished sixth overall with a combined time of 37:35. The next group of Panthers to score were Lewis Nottonson, Jacob Volz and Gabe Mahoney, who placed 15th in 38:48.
On the women's side, Cate Brams, Orli Schwartz and Katie Feldman were the first group to cross the line, placing 12th overall with a time of 45:04. Middlebury's other scoring team of Kaitlin Fink, Luna Wasson and Claire Benton combined for a time of 46:23 to place 17th.
