The Middlebury ski teams are hosting the 94th annual winter carnival at the Snow Bowl and Rikert Nordic Center. After one day of competition, Dartmouth leads with 498 points, followed by Vermont (425), the Panthers (365) and Williams (329). Rob Cone highlighted Friday's action, taking home first-place honors in the slalom to lead the team to the victory. Action continues on Saturday with the GS races as well as men's and women's relay events on the nordic side.

Cone's win was his seventh-career carnival victory and first in the slalom this season. In third-place after one run, Cone was steady again in run number two, navigating a tough gate on the lower part of the hill to come away with the win in a two-run time of 1:34.51. Colin Hayes was not far behind, taking home fourth-place honors with a combined time of 1:35.14. Christopher McKenna just missed the top 10, earning a time of 1:37.27 to finish 11th overall.

Leading the women's team was Jackie Atkins, who continued her consistent season with a 13th-place finish (1:40.15). Two spots back was Katie Utter, who came in 15th-place overall with a combined time of 1:40.42. Completing the team's scorers was Katy Greene, who crossed the line 24th overall in 1:43.86.

At the Rikert Nordic Center, Lewis Nottonson cracked the top 10 for the Panther men, earning a seventh-place finish with a time of 46:44. Sam Wood covered the 20K free course with a time of 47:34, good for 14th place. Rounding out the scorers was Adam Luban, who came in 18th overall in 48:35 as his team finished third in the event.

Katie Feldman paced the women in the 15K free event, crossing the line in 42:24 to finish in 17th place. Covering the course with a time of 42:34 was Kaitlin Fink, who took home 20th-place honors. Cate Brams rounded out Middlebury's top finishers in 24th place, earning a time of 42:59.
